Are Aquatic Turtles a good choice for my first pet?

I have been you could say "deprived" of having a pet as a child, because my mom hates dogs and cats and would never even consider getting me any type of pet. Now however, I am 17 and I have two jobs which I would be able to buy a pet and mom said I am allowed to have one (besides a dog or cat). So I was wondering would an aquatic turtle(s) be a cool/easy first pet, since I am not used to taking care of pets.
